The Importance of Using a Licensed Architect

While architecture is certainly an art form, it’s still extremely vital to hire a licensed architect when completing your design and building projects. These skilled professionals must go through a variety of educational and training courses as well as practice some architecture in order to gain real-world experience. Before you decide to ask someone to help you with your architecture goals, keep in mind just how crucial it is to enlist the help of an officially licensed architect.

Education and Experience

All architects must start the journey with their education. Most students who want to receive their architecture license must earn a degree from programs that are accredited by the NAAB, or the National Architectural Accrediting Board. This ensures that every course taken adheres to the latest standards and practices. Aside from education, the experience itself is vital. After getting a degree, budding architects will need to document their experience through the Architectural Experience Program, which provides a framework to help architects as they earn and report their professional experience.

Exams

A licensed architect must complete and pass the Architect Registration Examination or ARE. This exam has different divisions, each designed to help the individual work within their specific profession. The exam ensures that all architects have the skills and knowledge they need in the areas of safety, health, and welfare. Once the exam is complete, it’s time to move on to licensure and certification.

Licensing / Certification

After earning a degree, gaining some real-world experience, and passing the ARE exam, a licensed architect must also meet some other requirements. Depending on the jurisdiction, each locality has its own specific requirements in place. After these requirements are met, the architect can apply for a license to practice architecture in that jurisdiction and pass their knowledge and experience on to you for a wonderful finished product.
